Young people and housing

I have just been through an intense period of work, spending almost every day in Truro and today I was privileged to chair an Inquiry Day into Youth Homelessness. This has been an increasingly worrying issue being brought to me by councillors from all the major towns in Cornwall. The Inquiry Day was held after Communities OS Committee was made aware of our concerns. It contained presentations on what the current provision is and a look at what more could be done. The most amazing part was when a group of young people from the Foyers across Cornwall came and shared their lives with us. We were embarrassed that some had felt that they had been rejected by the council when looking for help, we were delighted to hear how they have managed to turn their lives around and had gone back to education – some earning university places and others qualifications at college. We have made recommendations which will go through the finance/budgetary system  and have listened to and endorsed ways whereby funding already available would be used in a slightly different and more effective way.  Finally after 3 years of this council I feel that I may have achieved just one tiny piece of good work.
